“Live Simply, Love Generously”~ our Stewardship Theme

Fall arrives, and we turn from a more relaxed pace, from the spontaneity the longer, warmer days summer offers, and resume the mantle of routine ~ of school, activities, of a regular, predictable schedule.

For many of us, the events of this last year, especially with their economic impact, have necessitated a new meaning for “regular” and “routine”. Personal finances have been severely impacted, with furloughs, retirement plan values, pay cuts, or job losses affecting too many. It has been a year--and will probably continue to be for another while longer—that tested our ability to stretch resources, and use them as creatively as possible. Our stewardship ~ our management of resources and property ~ will need to be on its “A” game.

We have found ways to live simply: library usage is up dramatically in our neighborhood; free community concerts offer family entertainment; the “staycation” became a byword as families economized finding ways they could enjoy a rest and reprieve from work, yet not incur the expenses of two weeks of hotels, restaurant meals, and airfare. Many of us planted a garden to grow some of the foods we eat. Bartering has found its way back into vogue, as goods or services are exchanged for other goods or services, without money coming into play. “Live Simply” has become a daily conservation practice for many of us, in our commuting habits, grocery shopping, and new entertainment alternatives.

Yet, when the economy is in poor straights, is it harder for us to “Love Generously”? With such uncertainty and financial instability, how natural it is to retrench, to resist reaching out. We are anxious to conserve precious resources.
But consider this: It is exactly right now that our time, our talent, and our trea$ure are needed so much, and can have an incredible impact on those whose resources are even fewer than ours. St. Gabriel’s has been practicing very responsible stewardship this last year as resources dwindled, creating a “faith based giving” budget, and spending wisely where obligations and needs directed. But there is so much more to do, for our parish, for our community, for our world.

During this season of Stewardship, please pray, and think creatively about how you, as individuals and a family, can share your gifts with St. Gabriel’s. How can you “Live Simply, Love Generously” and offer your time, talents and treasure? The need is so great, and we are so blessed to be able to help in any way to share God’s world with his own people.

Friday, October 9th, we will gather for a great meal and fellowship as we spotlight a few of St. Gabriel’s ministries, think about the year just passed, and the year ahead. Bring your whole family for dinner that evening, and let this experience contribute to your prayerful consideration of your gift to St. Gabriel’s this year.

Prayerfully,
George Kyler and Cathy Prenger,
Stewardship Co-Chairs
